Signing a Kawenata Tapu ( Sacred Covenant) with Ngāti Paoa

8/12/2017

Kia ora,

Further to our October email advising that "We are looking to progress a Ngāti Paoa – Ngāti Ranginui Kawenata process" we are pleased to advise that we will be signing a Kawenata Tapu (Sacred Covenant) with Ngāti Paoa on Saturday, 16 December 2017. Ngāi Te Rangi and Ngāti Pūkenga will be doing the same. The signing ceremony will be held at  Maungatapu Marae, commencing at 8:30am.

To enhance the mana of this event Ngāti Paoa plan to be accompanied by their waka taua Kotuiti Tuarua. Our waka Takitimu will be on the water to receive Kotuiti Tuarua and Ngāi Te Rangi are investigating the possibility of the waka Mataatua Toi participation.

We would value your attendance and support at this significant event and appreciate you sharing this communication with ngā uri o Ngāti Ranginui who may not have a registered email address.

A Ngāti Paoa - Ngāti Ranginui Success Story

18/10/2017

Ngāti Paoa presented their Tikanga Process “Take Whenua, Take Moana” to Tauranga Moana iwi (Ngāti Ranginui, Ngāi Te Rangi and Ngāti Pūkenga) at Te Whetu o Te Rangi Marae yesterday.

Ngāti Pūkenga’ offer to host the hui at Whetu Marae and our Kuia Merewhiua Bennett’s karanga welcoming Ngāti Paoa manuhiri set the scene for a tikanga process to occur.

Ngāti Ranginui representatives came away feeling encouraged and humbled by Ngāti Paoa’ open, honest and transparent presentation from Hayden Solomon and Chairman, Gary Thompson.

Tika, Pono me te Aroha are the mātāpono (key principles) of Ngāti Paoa’ tikanga process which are clearly aligned with Ngāti Ranginui’ tikanga process.

Ngāti Paoa confirmed that they have no interests in Tauranga Moana.

We are looking to progress a Ngāti Paoa – Ngāti Ranginui Kawenata process.

This is a great outcome as we continue to engage with the individual iwi of Hauraki.
